RSC Update - Term 2, Week 1

  featured image

Welcome to Term 2!

Following on from the activities suggested in recent RSC Updates, below is a selection of wellbeing, motor skills, brain breaks and incidental physical activities for primary aged students that can be incorporated in the classroom, playground, backyard and in the home.  They are a great way to break up the school day and help energise or calm children as needed.

1. Goanna Climb

Goanna_Climb.JPG

Goanna Climb is a pre-writing strength and control activity.  The benefits include:

  • Improving postural strength and control.
  • Strengthening the upper limb, which is important for developing fine motor strength and control.
  • Helping children "use up" excess energy.

Classroom Tip:

  • Goanna Climb is ideal to do after lunch breaks, against a wall before entering the classroom.  This provides students with deep pressure sensory input to their torso and joints, which can assist them to achieve a "calm, alert" state ready for learning.

The Goanna Climb student handout provides an explanation on how to perform the exercise correctly.

2. Forest Floss

Forest_Floss_Image.jpg

A fun and great way to focus your class!

Forest Floss:

  • Improves children's ability to cross the body's midline.  Crossing the midline is important for the process of developing a dominant hand and development of fine-motor skills.
  • Improves coordination.
  • Strengthens abdominal muscles, which are important for good posture.
  • Is a quick energising activity to help wake up even the sleepiest students!

The Forest Floss student handout provides an explanation on how to perform the exercise correctly.

3. Kangarooro Jump

Kangaroo_Jump.png

Build strength and fitness!

Benefits of Kangaroo Jump:

  • Strengthens our legs.
  • Improves body control and balance.
  • Helps to fulfil children's sensory needs.
  • Effective for emotional regulation.

Tip:

  • Due to the sensory input it provides, Kangaroo Jump can be beneficial for children who are sleepy/bored.  This exercise is very useful for assisting children to feel calm, alerty and ready for learning.

The Kangaroo Jump student handout provides an explanation on how to perform the exercise correctly.

GymZooNasium.JPG

Schools who sign up to GymZOONasium get access to videos, handouts and extension tasks for a huge selection of brain breaks, meditations, yoga poses and other classroom-based physical activities.

GymZOOnasium has been 100% designed and made in Australia by a passionate team of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Exercise Physiologists, Yoga Instructors, Teachers, Parents and Amazing Kids.

The result is a fun and engaging program that is inclusive for all abilities.

Your school can sign up for a free trial to review the activities and program before making any financial commitment.

3. Supporting Physical Activity - Short Videos to Share

Early_Learning_Unit.jfif

The Department of Education's Early Learning Unit have developed information and videos that can be shared with staff and families via social media or other school communication tools, to promote physical activity in young children.

The Supporting Physical Activity - Early Learning Information Pack includes links to a series of videos promoting physical activity opportunities at home, at the beach, in the bush and at the park.  These videos provide practical ideas on how families can support their child's physical development.

KIDDO's world-leading professional development course The Certificate of Physical Literacy has been featured in research published in the Psychology of Sport and Exercise Journal.

The research examined how effective an online professional development course in physical literacy is in improving primary school teachers' knowledge and confidence to deliver physical literacy in class.

The randomised control trial showed that teachers who completed the professional development:

    • Placed greater value on physical literacy
    • Had more confidence to deliver a physical literacy program to their class
    • Showed improved physical literacy knowledge and application
    • And, faced less barriers to delivering physical literacy than their peers who did not complete the PD

What is the KIDDO Certificate of Physical Literacy?

The six-module course has been proven to increase confidence to teach physical literacy and program physical literacy into their classroom.  Here is a snapshop of each of the modules:

    1. The importance of physical literacy
    2. What are Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS)?
    3. Teaching FMS in early childhood
    4. Assessing FMS
    5. Physical literacy for all (inclusion)
    6. Promoting motivation in children

More information is available on the KIDDO website, including the costs for certifications and resources for individuals or entire organisations.
