Howzat? Norwood Primary School out - caught netball bowled cricket
When Sport Australia announced their new Club Connect Program Norwood Primary School (NPS) jumped at the chance to run the pilot program in their school.
It was seen as an excellent way to foster better collaboration between NPS students, parents and local clubs.
The Club Connect program aims to support primary school students transition from a school-based sporting program to participation at their local sporting club, promoting lifelong engagement in sport.
Cricket Australia and Netball Australia are two national sporting organisations (NSOs) who have been involved in the pilot program in 2021/2022 and have committed to working with schools and teachers to deliver programs outside school hours.
With the assistance of the Regional Sport Coordinators, NPS chose to partner with the Generation Netball club and the South Launceston Cricket club to offer sporting opportunities to their students after hours. The clubs ran a number of sessions with a group of students which improved their skills and introduced them to key club personnel. The funding offered also allowed the school to upgrade their sporting equipment.
Feedback from these programs was extremely positive. Students and their families were able to gain a better understanding of and build relationships with local sporting clubs. These relationships fostered a positive connection between community and school sport. An essential goal of the Club Connect initiative is to connect students with community sport. NPS’ participation in the Northern Primary School Netball roster is a key example of school sport participation transitioning to community sport.
An ongoing partnership has now been established with both the Generation Netball Club and the South Launceston Cricket club with students and their families being able to access and participate in their club programs.
For assistance in exploring similar partnerships to support students to access and participate in sport and physical activities, please contact the Regional Sport Coordinators.
